gazzetta interviewed Italy’s former coaches and here are their comments on Nesta and Totti’s decision to retire from the Azzurri.
Vicini:
Bisogna accettare le scelte di Totti e Nesta. E basta discussioni. Se uno volesse saltare un’amichevole per giocare solo le gare importanti, capirei le critiche. Ma se uno che ha dato tanto alla Nazionale decide poi di lasciare, beh, mi sembra legittimo.
Translation:
We need to accept the choices of Totti and Nesta. And the discussion is enough. If one wanted to jump a friendly and only to play the important games, I would understand the criticisms. But if one that has given so much to the Nazionale, decides to leave, it seems legitimate to me.
Maldini (Cesar)
Nesta e Totti sarebbero stati molto utili. Ma hanno fatto una scelta. E, a sentire Totti, con coerenza.
translation:
Nesta and Totti would have been very helpful. But they have made a choice. And need to hear Totti with coherence.
Zoff
Altroché se Totti e Nesta sono importanti. Ma se hanno deciso di non giocare, ne faremo a meno.
translation:
Certainly Totti and Nesta are important. But if they have decided not to play, we will do without them.
Lippi
Totti e Nesta mi sembrano casi chiusi, come Francesco ha riconosciuto con serietà e coerenza.
translation:
Totti and Nesta seem to be closed cases to me, as Francesco has recognized with seriousness and coherence.
